Glossary
Cellular terms
1G
1G was the first generation of wireless networks that were based on analog information technologies.
2.5G
2.5 G has faster Data transfer speeds than 2G and introduces new data-oriented services and applications. GPRS is the best-known 2.5G technology.
2G
Digitally based technology offering improved voice quality, Data security and low cost alternatives to phone calls such as SMS. 2G is complete with Roaming technology which allows you to use your phone abroad.
3.5G
3.5G is bringing enhancements to 3G features, such as High Speed Downlink Application (HSDPA). This simply allows you to access your e-mails, downloads and transmissions faster than ever before.
3G
This allows for quicker and larger volumes of voice and non-voice Data transfer such as broadcasts, video and email across GSM.
4G
4G is the new global standardization mechanism due to roll out at the beginning of 2010. You will be able to be connected to several wireless access technologies at the same time and will be able to move freely between them all.
Account Administrator
A Nashua Mobile term for the person who manages multiple mobile phone contracts within a company. (Also see: Corporate account administrator) Activate
Activation fee
A fee charged by your Service Provider for activating your phone with your chosen Network and for providing you with a mobile number
Active flip
A setting that allows you to answer and complete a call by flipping open and closing the cover of a Clamshell phone.
Airtime
Airtime refers to the credit (measured in minutes or seconds) you use for actual time spent talking on the phone and for value added services such as SMS. Rates vary according to your Tariff Package.
Any key answer
You can set your phone to answer incoming calls by pressing any button on the Keypad.
Any time minutes
Some packages allow free talk time minutes during peak and off Peak hours.
Automatic answer
Available on flip, slide and Clamshell phones (and the hands free kit) this setting allows you to take a call without having to press a button by the act of opening and closing the phone. (Also see Active flip and Any key answer)
Automatic redial
This phone setting allows you to redial a busy number by pressing the call button.
Bandwidth
The range within a band of frequencies where a certain amount of Data can be transmitted in a fixed amount of time.
BlackBerry
BlackBerry offers you Push e-mail and Voice-mail using your BlackBerry Handset. Subscribe to a wireless service with your Network provider to allow Data transmission
Blacklisting
By Blacklisting your phone with your Service Provider when lost or stolen, you effectively block your SIM card from all further use. Activate
Bluetooth
This free service allows secure Data transmission using radio waves between cell phone and computer devices.
Broadband
A fast, permanent internet connection for which you usually pay a flat monthly rate.
Browser (Microbrowser)
An application that allows you to access the World Wide Web by using your mobile phone.
Bulk MMS
Allows you to create exciting visual MMS campaigns using IMS Office where you are able to compile scheduled CSV distribution lists; fully-timed MMS slide shows combining images, video and sound on a single slide; automatically compressed images to fit any cellphone resolution.
Cactus
Nashua Mobile's billing and operational support system. This includes the billing engine, rating system, database and provisioning systems, as well as Nashua Mobile's Customer Relations Management solution.
Call blocking
This facility can be set to your phone and allows you to block certain numbers so that calls may not be made to or received from them.
Call discreet
For outgoing calls you may want to keep confidential, you are now able to assign a label to that specific number (such as 'Office') which will not only pop up on your phone when making this call, but will also be reflected on your itemised bill. Activate
Call divert
You can set your phone to divert incoming calls from your cellphone to another number at a minimal fee.
Call holding
This enables you to put a caller on hold while a second call is answered or made.
Call restrictions
A service offered by your Service Provider whereby all incoming and outgoing calls may be restricted to a stipulated amount.
Call transfer
This allows you to transfer a caller to another number. Charges apply. (Also see: Call diverts)
Call waiting
When you are busy on your line and receive another call, this setting requests the second caller to wait while notifying you of this additional call.
Caller display
The number of an incoming caller is displayed on-screen before the phone is answered. (Also see: Caller ID, CLI) Activate
Caller ID
As with Caller display, this setting identifies the number of the incoming caller on your/the receiver's screen. Activate
Cancellation fee
The cost to terminate your Contract before its expiry date.
Car kit
An installation that allows you to use your phone while driving without having to hold the phone.
Cessions (Change of ownership)
Your Contract can be given to another party provided the new customer takes the Contract on as is. The new prospective owner will be credit vetted prior to being accepted as the new owner. The cell number, Contract period and the terms and conditions remain unchanged. Cost is R50.00. Activate
Clamshell
A flip phone resembling the shape of a clam shell and opens up in the same way. These phones have larger screens than traditional phones
CLI
Calling Line Identification. This feature displays the caller's phone number on screen of the mobile phone receiving the call. (Also see: Caller display, Caller ID) Activate
CLR
Calling Line Restriction. Stops the person you're calling from seeing your number on their phone. Activate this service by calling your Service Provider.
Connection Fee
Once-off cost to your Service Provider to activate your new phone on a Network. Cost varies across networks.
Contract
A typical 24 month service agreement with a Service Provider. (Also see: Package) Activate
Corporate account administrator
A Nashua Mobile term for the person that manages multiple mobile phone contracts within a company. (Also see: Account Administrator) Activate
Corporate account user
A Nashua Mobile term for the person who has their mobile phone Contract managed by an administrator within their company. Activate
Coverage
This is the signal region within which your cell phone can reliably receive transmission from your particular Network.
Data
Data refers to all SMS's, MMS's, emails, faxes, voicemails and downloads made from or sent to your phone.
Data package
A Package or Contract that allows you to send and receive SMS, faxes, Data files, E-mail and provides access to the internet. This is billed in kBps.
Detailed billing
A detailed breakdown of all calls and SMS's, MMS downloads you have made, together with value added service subscriptions, presented in your bill listed by number, time, date and cost.
Disconnected Number
Related to contracts that have expired or have been cancelled by the subscriber.
Dual Benefit
Dual Benefit is an innovative billing solution aimed at corporate customers and their employees. The Company pays a monthly allowance towards the employee's cellphone bill and the employee is liable for any charges in excess of the monthly allowance. Monthly cost R15.50. Activate.
Dual-band
A mobile phone capable of operating on two different frequencies that can be used in various countries operating on these frequencies. (Also see: Tri-band, Quad-band)
E mail billing
E-mail billing is a service offered by Nashua Mobile that enables you to receive invoices and statements via E-mail that are fully SARS compliant. Activate
EDD
Electronic Document Distribution. A SARS compliant programme that reduces costs dramatically by distributing invoices and accounting documentation at a quarter of the price of regular paper based communications
EDGE
Enhanced Data for GSM Evolution. This is a super quick GPRS technology that allows your Data to be transferred to your phone much faster.
E-mail
The ability to access and produce written messages and attachments electronically using Internet technology that may be accessible by cellphone. Intellisync is an example of a convenient corporate cell phone email service.
Fax service
Service Providers offer fax facilities on your mobile phone account, allowing you to transfer incoming faxes to the nearest fax machine or onto your PDA, which is viewable on the display screen. Activate
Gateway
A node that connects two different networks.
GPRS
General Packet Radio Service. A technology allowing you to transfer info with your mobile phone, similar to the way info is sent over the internet. Rates are charged for the amount of Data downloaded and not the time taken to download them.
GPS
Global Positioning System. A satellite navigational system that can be installed on particular phones which determines a precise location or coordinates and directs you to a particular destination.
GSM
Global System for Mobile Communications. GSM offers improvement in voice quality, low cost alternatives to making calls such as text messaging and the ability to roam using your mobile phone anywhere in the world. (Also see: 2G, Dual-band, Tri-band)
Handover
This is the process whereby one Network transfers your call from one cell mast to another as you move around.
Hands-free
A kit that enables you to utilise the phone without having to hold the phone. This is available as an accessory for mobile phones.
Happy Hour
If you are a Vodacom subscriber you get 50 % off prepaid voice and video calls between 5pm and 8pm everyday. Voice and Video calls are charged at R1.49 (incl. VAT) per minute during this time.
Hard-locked
Your Service Provider hard-locks your phone if you are more than 2 months late with payments. No calls can be made or received at this time and access to voicemail is denied.
HSCSD
High Speed Circuit Switched Data. This is the improvement made to GSM, increasing the rate of Data transfer from 14.4kbps to 57.6kbps.
HSDPA
High-Speed Download Packet Access. This is also known as 3.5G technology. It allows you to access downloads and e-mails faster than ever before.
Inclusive talktime
Free minutes that are included in your monthly subscription. These do not apply to several service numbers or to international calls and vary from Package to Package.
Individual customer
A Nashua Mobile term for a customer who is entirely responsible for his/her own mobile phone bill. Activate
Integrated SMS Solution
A bulk SMS service aimed at SME's and Corporates that is offered by Nashua Mobile. Click here for more info.
Integrated Solutions
A complete way of managing your business with purpose built solutions around Intelligent SMS, Least Cost Faxing and SARS approved Electronic Bill Presentation.
International roaming
A facility that enables you to use your phone abroad while keeping the same number. Roaming activation must be requested at least a week prior to departure Activate
Internet billing
This is a service offered by Nashua Mobile that allows you to access your account information via the Internet. You can manage, sort and personalise your monthly statement or invoice with Nashua Mobile's advanced tools and Phone book option. Activate
IrDA
Infrared Data Association. A phone that is IrDA-enabled can connect wirelessly to a mobile computer with an infra-red port with no cost involved.
Itemised billing
A detailed breakdown of all calls, SMS's and MMS downloads and value added service subscriptions; listed by number, time, date and cost. (Also see: Detailed billing) Activate
Keypad
This refers to the buttons on your mobile phone.
Landlines
Refers to phones that operate off a fixed line and not signal such as satellite phone and cellular phones.
LCD
Liquid Crystal Display. This is the type of screen on your cell phone.
LED
Light Emitting Diode the illumination of your cell phone screen when electricity passes through it.
Loan Phone
If your phone is being repaired, you can make use of a Nashua Mobile Loan Phone, which will minimise the inconvenience to your business and personal life.
Message alert
An indicator alerting the user that there is a new unread message in hi/her message inbox
MMS
Multimedia Messaging Service. An extension of SMS allowing you to send and receive multimedia such as video, images and sound. To receive MMS settings> Cell C: Send an SMS with MMS as the subject to 084 155 9911. MTN: Press *123*12# Call. Vodacom: Press *111# Call.
Mobile balance
Mobile balance is a service offered by Nashua Mobile that sends you an SMS with your current account balance, your last invoice total, your international Airtime balance and/or your remaining free minutes. Activate
Mobile Number Portability
The ability for you to switch Service Providers or Networks while keeping the same phone number.
Modem
A Data manipulating device which allows you to access the Internet via phone or computer.
MPG
Multi Protocol Gateway. A suite of products offered by Nashua Mobile integrating E-mail and cellular communication tools. (see also, Smartmail, IMS, Integrated Solutions, EDD, Short Code Services, Bulk MMS)
Network
South Africa has three Networks: Vodacom, MTN and Cell C. The Networks consist of towers and base stations that span the country and connect and transfer your calls.
Number change
A service that allows you to change your mobile phone number without having to replace your SIM card or change your Contract. Activate
Off-peak hours
Calls are usually 50% cheaper on weekdays from 8pm to 7am, weekends and public holidays.
Package
A Package is the pricing structure associated with the Network Contract that you are on. (Also see: Contract) Activate
Package Migration
A Package Migration occurs when you change packages but not Networks. If you migrate to a higher Package there is no charge. (Also see: Tariff Migration) Activate
PC sync
The two way transmission of Data between cellphone and computer and the ability to synchronise applications between the two.
PDA
Personal Digital Assistant. A personal organiser that allows you to store information and to use simple software programs as made by companies such as Palm. Several PDA's, such as iMate, come with built-in mobile phones.
Peak calls
Peak calls are calls made between 7am to 8pm, Monday to Friday. During this time, calls are at their most expensive because the Networks experience heavy traffic. (Also see: Peak hours)

Phone book
The list of names and telephone numbers you've stored in your phone's internal memory or on its SIM card.
Photo ID
A facility that allows you to set custom pictures to Phone book entries. When that number calls the corresponding picture appears on your screen. This is only available with certain mobile phones.
Picture messaging
Sending and receiving picture messages on your cellphone. Picture messages can also be sent via MMS. (Also see: MMS)
PIN
Personal Identity Number. A personal security number that you will be requested to enter when switching on your phone to enable you to use the device.
Polyphonic ring tone
A sophisticated ring tone that may be downloaded where various notes are played at the same time with improved sound quality.
Predictive text
Predictive text allows you type SMS's faster because the mobile phone automatically finishes words while you are still typing them in.
Pre-paid
A Package that allows you to buy a certain amount of Airtime in advance of use which helps you to monitor your spending. Airtime can be bought off the website, at shops or by phone. Activate
PUK code
Your PUK code allows you to unblock your phone if an incorrect PIN has been entered more than three times. To get this number click here or call 0861 412 412.
Pull sms
You can request services (e.g. ringtones or games) from a wireless PHONE via your WAP browser. The service requested is sent back to your phone via SMS
Push e-mail
E-mail is automatically 'pushed' to your mobile phone and updates made on your phone are automatically synchronised with your PC.
Push sms
You can request services (i.e. ring tones or games) from your cell phone by sending a preset SMS code to a predetermined number. The service is sent to you by SMS via your phone.
Quad-band
Compared to a Tri-band phone supporting the 850 / 1800 / 1900 bands, a Quad-band phone adds support for GSM 900 for full Coverage in Europe and Asia. (Also see: Dual-band and Tri-band)
Ringtone ID
You can set a certain ringtone to a certain number which will ring upon receiving a call from that caller.
Roaming
A service which enables you to use your mobile phone outside the usual Coverage area (ie: abroad) at an extra cost. Activate
Screensaver
An animation that appears on the cell phone's display when your phone is not being used.
Serial Number
Each cell phone sold has a unique Serial Number, usually printed underneath the battery. If your phone is stolen, it is essential that you have this number, so that you can have it blocked from further use.
Service Provider
Your Service Provider, such as Nashua Mobile, is the company that looks after your Contract and your connection to your Network, such as MTN, Cell C or Vodacom. Your Service Provider tracks all your Data (e.g. calls, SMS's, MMS's, emails etc) and sends you your monthly invoice.
Short Code Services
Inbound SMS to any websites at premium rates on a short code number. Choose Premium Rated SMS from Nashua Mobile.
SIM
Subscriber Identity Module card. This is a Network specific card that allows the user to be identified by his/her Network, to store personal information and to view call and SMS information in terms of number, time, date and cost.
SIM Sure
Insurance on your SIM card offered by Nashua Mobile which replaces a lost, damaged or stolen card.
SIM Swap
Replaces your old or faulty SIM card. The cost varies according to the Network you use. Activate
Smartphone
A combination of cellphone and Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) technologies, which allows you to install applications such as GPS to your PDA using your Smartphone.
SMS
Short Message Service. This enables you to communicate by sending messages from your mobile phone to other mobile phones at minimal cost.
SMS bundles
An optional Contract which includes an amount of additional SMS's every month at a fixed fee. The carrying over of unused SMS's depends on your Service Provider.
SMS4Info
Nashua Mobile can now SMS your account information to you. To request this service, you need to dial 32940 and enter a short code provided on the website.
Soft-locked
Your phone is Soft-locked if you are more than a month late with payment. No calls can be made at this time but you will be able to receive call. Access to your voicemail is lost.
Spend limit service
Spend limit service is a mandatory limit that is loaded on all client accounts in order to ensure that cellphone bills are kept within manageable limits. When you reach 80% of your limit, Nashua Mobile will send you a warning SMS, and upon reaching 100% of your limit, your phone will be Soft-locked. The limit can be adjusted by contacting Nashua Mobile, where we will either reassess your credit facility or require a holding deposit for the additional limit. Activate
Split Billing
Split Billing is a billing solution aimed at corporate customers. The Company owns the line and sets a monthly allowance. The employee signs a Split Billing agreement with the company that commits him/her to any amount in excess of the allowance. Activate at R15.50 per month.
Standby time
The amount of time your cellphone's battery will last without being charged when it is not being used to make and receive calls.
SyncML
Synchronization Markup Language, an industry-wide effort to create a single, common Data synchronization protocol optimized for wireless networks (currently referred to as: Open Mobile Alliance Data Synchronization and Device Management).
Talktime
The amount of time your cellphone's battery will last without being charged when in continual use.
Tariff
A list of charges for services provided. Tariffs are usually made up of a fixed monthly fee and call costs that vary depending on the time of day you make your calls. Some tariffs include a fixed number of free calls per month. (Also see: Contract, Package) Activate
Tariff Migration
Should you find that the Tariff plan you are currently using has become unsuitable, it can be changed (or 'migrated') to a more suitable Tariff plan on the same Network. (See also: Package Migration) Activate
Tri-band
A Tri-band mobile phone is able to operate on three different frequencies. They are useful for travelers, allowing Roaming on a greater number of networks across the world. (Also see: Dual-band and Quad-band)
Twincall
A second SIM card may be issued and linked to your existing number for your convenience. Activate
Upgrade
When a Contract nears expiry, usually from the 22nd month of your Contract, you become eligible for a new mobile phone if you extend your Contract. Activate
URL
Uniform Resource Locator. A name or number specifying a location on the Internet, such as a website or page on a website. E.g. http://WWW.nashuamobile.com
USB
Universal Serial Bus. A computer port where devices such as memory sticks and phones may be plugged in and the Data transferred to your computer.
Vibration alert
A feature that notifies you of an incoming call or new SMS by vibrating rather than ringing.
Video SMS
Sending a high quality (300 kilobytes) video clip of up to 30 seconds via SMS. A cable phone is required to be able to send a Video SMS.
Voice activation
Allows you to dial a phone by voice instead of punching in the numbers.
Voice Memo
A feature that allows you to record and store voice information.
Voice recognition
Enables calls to be made by using voice commands rather than punching in numbers. Voice commands can now also be used to access menu options.
Voice-mail
This service, provided by your Network, records messages when either you do not answer the call or are busy on the line. To activate call> Cell C: 144; MTN > 100; Vodacom > 121
Voice-mail box number
A number you call, depending on your Network provider, to access your Voice-mail. Vodacom: 131, MTN: 100 and Cell C: 141.
VoIP
Voice over Internet Protocol. Technology for transmitting voice sound over the Internet allowing you to have a conversation over the web using a microphone and earphones.
VPPT
Nashua Mobile gives you two great ways to recharge up to 10 phones quickly and conveniently on any Network. Call 2 Recharge lets you order Airtime with a call from your cell or from a landline
Wallpaper
Background pictures on your cell phone screen which may be downloaded and changed.
WAP
Wireless Application Protocol. An application on your mobile phone that enables WAP-compatible mobile phones to access websites for information (like news, travel, entertainment, finance and sport) via your mobile phone menu. To activate WAP settings> Cell C: Send an SMS with WAP as the subject to 084 155 9911. MTN: Press *123*12# Call. Vodacom: Press *111# Call.
WAP Phone
Includes a browser that allows users to access certain internet-based services from your mobile phone.
WASP
Wireless Application Service Provider. In conjunction with your Network, WASP lets you download enhanced applications such as bulk SMS, ringtones and Mobile Tracking.
WWW
World Wide Web. Another term for the Internet.
